Soul and Bliss!

Winding through green valleys and rolling vineyards you arrive, after an hour’s drive from Porto, in the Douro Valley. Here you will find the recently opened and first Six Senses Hotel in Europe. This former country house from the 19th century was built by a producer of port wine. Now it combines the charm and warmth of a historic building with the modern design of a luxury hotel.

Like all Six Senses Hotels, Douro Valley is located in a fairytale setting. In this valley there are magnificent vineyards. In addition to the famous port wine, white, red and muscatel wine are also produced here. Wine has been grown on the banks of the Douro for over two thousand years. In the area you can play golf, take a boat trip on the Douro and visit Quinta’s where you can taste the different types of port wine. One of the English porthouses, Sandeman, also still houses in the Douro Valley.

Six Senses was inspired by the warm colors of the Douro Valley, such as burgundy, soft gray, white and olive green, for the colors of the interior design. A casual mix of Asian and Western art, antiques and design was also created. In contrast, the dark steel frames and many tall windows are modern. Waking up in the lovely beds, the view of the ever-flowing Douro is breathtaking.

A walk through the organic garden at the end of the day is a must. On the right side of the estate, then colored golden by the sun, is the garden where vegetables and herbs are grown. These fresh ingredients are of course used in the fantastic dishes served at lunch and dinner.

A serene tranquility overwhelms you upon entering the Spa. Portuguese traditions are seamlessly combined here with the elements of water, stone and wood. The large Six Senses Spa houses no less than ten treatment rooms. Warm burning fireplaces and a lovely indoor pool ensure that Six Senses Douro Valley is a wonderful escape throughout the year and in different weather conditions.
